High-temperature measurement (suction pyrometer)
Suction pyrometers for accurate gas temperature measurement in furnaces, boilers and kilns.
Suction Pyrometers
Suction pyrometers are used when accurate gas temperature measurements are needed in high-temperature environments where standard thermocouples would give unreliable readings due to radiation effects. Typical applications include temperature profiling in furnaces, boilers, kilns and other combustion chambers, where gas temperatures can reach well above 1000 °C. By shielding the thermocouple and drawing the hot gas across the sensor at high velocity, the suction pyrometer minimises radiation errors and provides a true gas temperature reading.

How it works
In suction pyrometer measurements, the principle is to reduce the effect of the temperature sensor’s heat transfer via radiation by increasing the convective heat transfer from the flue gas. The pyrometer must have a length that allows traversing in the measuring plane, e.g. in the fireplace. The flow of cold water must be sufficient to prevent boiling in the pyrometer. The suction unit must have a sufficiently high capacity to provide up to 100 m/s near the temperature sensor.
